Upgrade ESXi from 5.0 to 5.5

Hi Guys,

We are in the process of upgrading  ESXi from 5.0 to 5.5 u2

Current ESXi 5.0 OS resides in local disk (datastore) , this hosts contains 5 VMs on the same local disk (datastore ) and will be upgraded to esxi 5.5 on a new different Hitachi SAN(datastore).

During the upgrade process, it will show two VMFS storage partitions one the existing and other will be newly configured one.

Uur query is, if we select the newly configured datastore to store the ESXi 5.5 OS and I guess it will prompt as follows

1.Upgrade ESXi, preserve VMFS datastore

2.Install ESXi, preserve VMFS datastore

3.Install ESXi, overwrite VMFS datastore

Which of the above option do we need to select so that all the vmdks of the VMs will be there and also the VMs in the inventory

Thanks in advance

Vignesh

Consolidate virtual machine disk files failed,duo to unable to access file since it is locked

ESXI 5.1

Vcenter 5.1

VDP 5.1

Can't consolidate virtual machine disk files, unable to access file<unspecified filename> since it is locked,  I checked virtual machine datastore, I found some VM_00001.vmdk,VM_00002.vmdk,VM_00003.vmdk,

recently, I delete my vdp server and reinstall it, I think it's root cause, and the virtual machines no snapshot,, But How to solve this issue,

Now consolidate and Migrate virtual machines will failed.

Decommissiong a VM and also remove its reserved resources from vRA

Hi,

I have created a service blueprint to power off the VM and delete it from the vCenter.  The workflow works fine, but it does not seem to released the resources from vRA.

So it said, the VM has actually deleted from vSphere, but from the vRA admin portal, Managed machines, I found the VM that I have decommissioned using the mentioned service blue print now shows as "Missing"

My question is how do I decommission the VM and also removed its reserved resources properly?

Thanks,

Jimmy

Will vSPhere Hypervisor key will work on Vendor customized OEM ISO ESXi image ?

Hi

I tried downloading the vSphere Hypervisor 5.5 and 6.0 revs as ISOs and in booting both on my system neither would show HDDs in the systems.

The systems are HP DL380 Gen9 servers which I know are on the HCL.

Is it permissible to use a vendor customized OEM image with the vSphere Hypervisor (Free) key ?  Or is that not OK to do legally ?

In other words - must I take the vSphere Hypervisor ISO and Customize it by injecting the proper drivers into it so it will work to use the Free Key ?

Thanks

vmsyslog filling up vCenter database

In our datacenter we had a few customers where their vCenter database filled up at an alarming rate. After checking in MSSQL what table was the culprit, we found out the VPX_EVENT and VPX_EVENT_ARG tables kept growing. Sure enough, in vCenter we saw a constant flow of these alerts:

Also in the vmkernel.log file we saw similar messages:

An issue with vmsyslog so it seems. Our syslog configuration however was perfectly fine:

(/etc/vmsyslog.conf)

[DEFAULT]

loghost = <none>

default_timeout = 180

logdir_unique = false

rotate = 8

logdir = <none>

size = 1024

[vmsyslog]

loghost = tcp://10.122.126.71:514, tcp://10.122.126.5:514

rotate = 8

size = 1024

Digging a bit deeper into the syslog error log revealed this:

At this stage, I was starting to wonder if the other side was actually working fine. We use VMware Syslog Collector to capture these logs and although the service was running fine, we noticed this in the debug log:

After some digging around so see how this service actually works (it basically is a Python script), I've noticed the Twisted framework being used is actually quite old (v8.2). I've then replaced SyslogCollectorLibrary.zip (the whole Python 2.6 environment compressed) with a version in which I've included the latest version on Twisted for Python 2.6 (v12.0). I stopped the service, replaced the zip file and restarted the service and almost immediately the flow of events stopped.

I've attached this modified zip file so other people can see if it helps if they encounter this issue.

Upgrading vCenter from 5.0 to 5.5 Update 2e

$

I need to upgrade my vSenter v. 5.0 to VMware vCenter Server 5.5 Update 2e.

The vCenter is a VM running Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 10.50.1600.

The VM is not member of Active Directory.

  • What should I consider before performing the update?
  • Where can I locate a detailed documentation of the upgrade process and a list of questions I'll have to answer?
  • During the update the ESXi hosts will go on working as well as the guest VM.
  • Should I try to power off as many VMs as I can?
  • Should I do anything at the SQL side?
  • Should I take a snapshot and/or make a (Veeam) backup of the vCenter VM in case anything goes wrong with the update?
  • Given something goes wrong during the update, can I just revert to the snapshot?
  • Is there anything else I can do to ensure a successfull update?

Regards

Marius

vRA 6.2 not connecting to external Postgres; Postgres Appliance showing connected instead of just listening

This is getting to be the longest lab installation ever.

vRA CAFE appliance is no longer connecting to Postgres (it was previously)

"NOT Connected: Error connecting database on jdbc:postgresql://<HOST>:5432/vcac as user vcac: Connection refused. Check that the hostname and port are correct and that the postmaster is accepting TCP/IP connections., Embedded DB is disabled"

vRA Postgres appliance however has the database as "Connected" when shouldn't it be disconnected there and have in the status that it is listening on all ports? How does one make it disconnect?

Attempt to log in to the vRA Console yields "Login failed. Please contact your System Administrator and report error code ixR1rJUa" since of course the appliance can't get to Postgres.

Anyone know of any way to get this back to functioning? We have no additional tenants at this point, just the default. Two appliances set up and have been working through some issues with the IaaS install so nothing done there yet.

intermittent guest customization issue of new vm provisioning when cluster is configured with HA and DRS

We are trying to provision new virtual machine using clone from image/template operation. When vm is provisioned on host with less resources, and when we try to power on the VM, its migrating to new host (As DRS and HA is enabled) and customization is not happening. Sometimes customization is happening and sometimes its not happening. Can someone help if this is a known issue or if we are missing anything. During vm provisioning if i look at vcenter status (customization is actually getting pushed during 90% to 97% status).  Below is the further description of the issue.

Guest customization is not successful when the VM migrates between the hosts in a cluster.

The issue is that the cluster in vCenter has 3 hosts out of which one of the host has less resources. When a VM provisioning with jumbo configuration (8 vCPU, 64 GB Ram & 40 GB) is triggered, if the resource allocation selects the host with least configuration then after VM provisioning is completed when the VM is powered on the VM is moved to other host with good configuration because of the DRS configuration.

we are using vcenter 5.5 version for this. Appreciate your help on this issue.

Ravi

Window 10's "free" upgrade and Fusion/Bootcamp - Activation issue

$

Installed Windows 10 EFI in Bootcamp mode successfully and upgraded+activated (upgraded from Win8.1 Pro), then did a clean install.  Still activated.  All good.

But after setting it up in Fusion and booting successfully, it broke activation.  Windows refused to re-activate in both environments after that, saying the product key was invalid or blocked.

Thankfully I was able to use WinClone to bring my activated copy back for Bootcamp/EFI mode, but now I can't use Fusion without breaking activation.

In the past I would activate Windows over the internet in Bootcamp and by the telephone method for Fusion, but the "free" upgrade thwarts that strategy.

Any advice, or is this a known issue?

Get-Stat -Server $vis -Start (Get-Date).AddHours(-4) -Finish (Get-Date) -stat cpu.usage.average -MaxSamples 1

If I change my hostname to any of the other 13 servers, I get the complete stat ouput...

vROPS Report Snapshots Older than X

Greetings all-- Please forgive me if this seems like a silly question.  We are new to vROPS (vROM?) and I'm working on trying to build a report that will show me a report of VMs with Snapshots over "x" days.  Does anyone know if this is possible?

I've seen and built ones that show will show diskspace used of a snapshot-- but nothing were I can simply have a report that says, "hey-- you've got a snapshot older than 7 days"...

Greatly appreciate any help here in advance.

Thanks!

Vami-sfcbd usages

Hi.

we have one RHEL VM installed on Vmware  ESXi 5.5

we could see from RHEL console that there is a service running named "vami-sfcbd"  on port 5488/5489.

Our Security  team raise a query  on the usages of these ports.

Like to  know what are the dependencies  on this service to run RHEL VM. If we stop this , what will be the impact.

FYI, this VM is built by VMstudio and later deployed on Vcenter from OVA.

Thanks is advance.

Vsphere 5.5 and Emulex OneConnect 10Gb NIC trouble

I have installed  ESXi5.5 in a server with Emulex OneConnect 10Gb NICs.

I have installed the last driver for this nic - elxnet-10.0.575.9-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820.x86_64.vib.

After some network activity of virtual machines, the interfaces go down, even the switch ports are up.
