fusion-io / sandisk ioDrive2 + ioTurbine / ioSphere on ESXi 6.0

Anyone have caching working with an ioDrive2 or similar card + ioTurbine on ESXi 6.0?  I've got the card running on the host with the libvsl-600-1.0.0-3.2.15.1699.zip, scsi-iomemory-vsl-60L-3.2.15.1699-offline_bundle-5351806.zip, & fusionio-cimprovider-esxi6-bundle-3.18.0-16.zip from Sandisk.  The Fusion ioSphere tab shows up on the ESXi hosts browsed through vCenter 6 client so it's registering correctly with the ioSphere 3.18 OVA but the ioTurbine component is missing with no option to install it when the 'update host software' is performed and there's no caching fields shown in the gui now.  Suggestions are appreciated.

Recently we have upgraded our vRealize 6.2 to 6.6 and by this post I am sharing the step by step procedure of doing the up-gradation.

Look wise it is love at first sight and functionality wise it is limitless, its outstanding.

The upgrade process of vRealize Operations is consists of two steps in series.

  • Part # 1 - Operating System Upgrade
  • Part # 2 - Product Upgrade

But amazingly it is very easy!

From single vRealize Operations Admin Console both steps will be performed. You just need to download the products from VMware Download Portal.

Download both as shown below.

  • vRealize Operations Manager - Virtual Appliance Upgrade
  • vRealize Operations Manager - Virtual Appliance Operating System Upgrade

Once you have downloaded the files, you will get below *.pak files which we need during up-gradation.

  • vRealize_Operations_Manager-VA-OS-6.6.0.5707160.pak (Use this file for Phase 1 up-gradation)
  • vRealize_Operations_Manager-VA-6.6.0.5707160.pak (Use this file for Phase 2 up-gradation)

Now let's move to up-gradation part.

NoteTo be on safer side, take a snapshot of running vROPs VM.

Phase # 1 - Upgrade vRealize Operating System

  • Login to vRealize Operations Manager Admin Console using – https://<vRops-IP-address>/admin. You will see below console.
  • Take the Cluster offline. Click on Take Offline.

  • Cluster Status is Offline now.
  • Click on the Software Update under Administration Panel.
  • Go to the Software Update Panel and Click on Install a Software Update.

  • Select the OS Upgrade PAK file(vRealize_Operations_Manager-VA-OS-6.6.0.5707160.pak) that you downloaded.

  • Click on Upload.

  • After the Upload completes, Click on Next.

  • Accept EULA and Click on Next.
  • Installation is in Progress now. It will take some time and redirect you to vRO Admin Interface. In between it automatically reboot the appliance.

  • Enter Admin Credentials and Login to Admin Interface.

  • Wait when an upgrade is completed. It will take some time to complete the OS Update.
  • Once OS update will be complete, Cluster status will be in Online state.
  • Now OS Upgrade has been completed. Now move to Phase 2 to upgrade Virtual Appliance.

Phase # 2 - Upgrade Virtual Appliance

  • Go to Administration Panel and Click on Software Update.
  • Click on Install a Software Update in right side.

  • Select the Virtual Appliance PAK file(vRealize_Operations_Manager-VA-6.6.0.5707160.pak) that you downloaded.

  • Click on Upload

  • After the Upload completes, Click on Next.

  • Accept the EULA and Click on Next.
  • Installation is in Progress now. It will take some time and redirect you to vRO Admin Interface. In between it automatically reboot the appliance.

  • Now look at the new Management Interface of vRealize Operations Manager 6.6. With new features in hand, it also changed the look and feel. Anyway, let's complete this then we will explore these all things.
  • Provide Admin Credentials and login to Admin Interface console.

  • Wait when an upgrade is completed. It will take some time to complete the Virtual Appliance Update.
  • Once VA update will be complete, Cluster status will be in Online state.

  • Installation is still in progress with different status. We need patience here. It's all about to complete.

  • Here we have Cluster Status is in Online State.
  • Up-gradation of vRealize Operations Manager from 6.2 to 6.6 has been Successfully Completed. Now jump in to User Interface.

  • To access vRO User Interface, we need to usehttps://<vRO_IPAddress>/ui/login
  • Provide credential and enjoy new version of Operation Manager with lot of enhancements.

  • I just clicked on Home page to look an overview. Explore all features by yourself and enjoy

Will keep you engaged with some more exiting articles on vRealize Operations Manager

Thanks for visiting here and hope it is useful.

NSX Edge Gateway - HA

I was going through the NSX Edge Gateway HA & I found the below link.

NSX 6 Documentation Center

Local link IPs are assigned to HA virtual machines in the NSX Edge HA so that they can communicate with each other.

You can specify management IP addresses to override the local links.

Would like to know by default what IP range is assigned for the HA for the local link.

I have 2 NSX Edge Gateways in ECMP, wanted to change from ECMP to HA. So would like to know about the local link IPs.

vCenter 6.0 - high CPU usage!

$

Hello!

When we was on vCenter 5.5 its CPU consumption chart was nearly flat when idle and was about ~400-500 Mhz max.

Now we have this when upgraded to vCenter 6:

vCenter6 CPU.PNG

High peaks every 5 minutes - some "java.exe" process from SYSTEM account suddenly pops out, use several CPU cores and then disappears. It shows 3 times, and use 40-100 Mb each time.

After another 5 minutes it is repeated.

The host is ESXi 5.5 and the vCenter VM is the only VM on that host. vCenter is completly idle for hours - no vMotions, etc.

How to find out which vmware service exactly uses the CPU? Maybe it is possible to disable it, or somehow restrict it.

Thank you!

Vmware Horizon View 7.0.3 - Linked clone - Persistent mode - Persona management - Windows 10 (1607) - -> Windows 10 Start Menu doesn't work (not appears on click)

Hello,

3 weeks ago i upraded my Horizon View infrastructure from 7.0.2 to 7.0.3

We have several desktop pool with Windows 7 and now an other one for testing Windows 10 (1607)

We have a problem with the Windows 10 Start menu (it doesn't appears when we click on it) not always but often.

This problem seems to be known with Windows 10 without considering virtualization

Our goldimage was optimized with VMware OSOT, and other standard recommandations like we made it with Windows 7.

We use linked clone in non-persistent mode with Vmware Persona. (share cifs on NAS,)
Since 2 years, everything works fine with Windows 7, all dedicated GPOs for Vmware View 7.0.3 are updated for the dedicated OU for W10 pool desktop.

In the last ticket (closed now), Support said us this problem will be fixed in the next release (7.0.3) but the problem is still there.

I just recreate a SR to VMware support,

Any idea ?

Your help, feedback or experience would be appreciated

Best regards

Daniel

Is instructor led training still required for VCP6/VCP6.5?

$

I'm interested in learning more about VMWare and virtualization, and would love to make a career of it, to the point that I've set up a VMWare ESXi home lab up. However, instructor led training presents an insurmountable barrier for me. There is no way that I can afford to fly to a strange city, pay for five days of food and lodging, and cough up another $2K or $3K for tuition. That's not to mention 5 days of lost pay from my job. And, there's no way my employer is paying for any of this.

My other certification (admittedly more basic than a VCP) I acquired with self-study. Other highly desirable certifications do not have this requirement. So if I'm interested in learning virtualization, it'd be far cheaper for me to get a Hyper-V or Red Hat cert. Why should I cough up thousands of dollars to get a VMWare cert?

Best options for my setup...

$

I'm just getting to the final testing phase of a server re-vamp, looking for advice on best VM setup options...

The end result on a 20 user setup is this...

2008r2 64bit running as domain controller, DNS, DHCP, AD

2008r2 64bit running as user file and printer sharing

2008r2 64bit running remote desktop services sharing to 10 users

2008r2 64bit running sql server 2008r2

XP legacy VM for our staff time-keeping setup (will be removed sometime soon as funds permit)

XP VM running a pre-processor for a printing press (isolated and cannot be removed)

Now, if i recall correctly (i'm at home and can't check) the server hardware is a Dell T410 with dual quad-core processors and 32gb ram with 8 x 1tb disks running as two raid10 data stores.

The VM running desktop services was already running and i think has two VCPU and 12gb ram allocated, the rest of the 2008 VM's are all still running default settings of 4gb ram and 1 VCPU, these are not in production yet, Domain control and sql services is still being provided by an old 2003sbs VM that will be killed off soon.

Is there a recommended setup i should look at or just go with defaults and see what happens?

I have no reservations, share tweaks etc, all defaults.

Any advice welcome and appreciated

Thanks

PSOD - ESXi 6.5 caused by sfcb-smx

We have a new server (HP DL380 G9) running VMware ESX 6.5 (build 4564106, HPE customised ISO).

Recently an error triggered a PSOD. The kernel dump indicates the cause was sfcb-smx (see attached)

According to the KB this is a known fault - https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2148526

1. Is there any point in raising a support request with VMware?

Will they provide any further information or is it a waste of time/money (we have a per request support contract).

2. Would rebuilding the environment using ESX 6.0 be a better option?

Re validate Windows 7 after updating Fusion

$

Today when I ran fusion a free software update was offered. I downloaded and installed this without issue however when I ran my Windows 7 OS I got the "this copy of windows is not genuine" I've no idea why? i guess because the Fusion update installs new virtual drivers. Anyway I restored the earlier version of Fusion and all has come good again. I'm worried if I attempt to re validate windows it will lock out all versions.

Can anyone suggest what the best course of action is?

Thanks

Workstation slower than expected

Hello

I'm running Workstation 12 on a physical machine which has:

  • Win7 Ultimate
  • 16 GB RAM
  • i-7 CPU @2.30 GHz

My Virtual machines are 3:

  • Win2008 R2 x64 x2 (6GB and 1GB allocated)
  • 1 ESX (4GB allocated)

And my 2 Windows 2008 run quite slow. Above all, the vCenter.

I haven't see much performance in running VMs since I upgraded from 8 to 16GB of physical memory.

VMWare is taking at most 150-200 MB of RAM (Firefox takes even more).

¿Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

macOS Sierra VM resolution is blurry

Team,

I’m running a macOS Sierra 10.12.5 VM on ESXi 6.5 but when I change the VM resolution to the same as the native resolution of my MacBook Pro 15” w/ Retina (2880×1800) the image is too large for the screen. A VM resolution of 1440×900 creates the correct size image but it’s not very sharp; it’s somewhat blurry. Any idea on how I can correct this? Thanks in advance!

Brad

Team,

In ESXi 6.5, if I try to set the video memory of this card to anything higher than 128MB on my macOS Sierra VM, the following configuration error is thrown.

Failed to reconfigure virtual machine Brad-Mac-Server. Invalid configuration for device '0'.

Any ideas?  I would like to set it as high as possible hopefully even the full 2GB if supported.

Thanks!

Hi,

I am working on upgrading to Horizon View 7.2.0.  I have created an "Automated Desktop Pool (Floating Linked Clone)".  When I go to the "STATUS" and use the drop down to "Enable Desktop Pool" I receive the error " [userid] failed to update Desktop [pool name] ".  I looked in the View Connection Logs and found the following error:

2017-06-22T23:31:02.871-04:00 ERROR (0A88-18AC) <pool-11-thread-5> [FaultUtil] InvalidArgument(parameter: desktopSettings.displayProtocolSettings.pcoipDisplaySettings.renderer3D): 3D rendering cannot be enabled when default protocol is RDP and users are not allowed to choose protocol.

In the Pool settings "3D Renderer" is Grayed Out and set to "disabled"

I did not have an issue Enabling the Pool configured like this in Version 6.2.0.

Thanks in advance,

Rick

Add a disk controller to an existing ESXI 6.5

I am looking to add a HBA disk controller to an existing ESXI 6.5 server to pass-through to a VM. When I use the old vSphere client I can see the adapter in the Storage Adapters section, but I cannot do anything with it. Clicking on the reference (LSI2008 -> vmhba1 if that is at all relevant) jst returns the message

An internal error occurred in the vSphere Client.

Details: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I have searched all over the place for any guidance on how to do this but have not been able to find anything about how to get VMware to recognise the HBA so I can see the disks and pass them through. If anyone could either point me in the direction of such a resource I would be grateful - or is it impossible to add an additional HBA to an existing system?

Hi,

Lately, our vROPs started throwing errors on 1 of our vDS that has low network capacity remaining (currently 10%).

Here is a screenshot of it:

vrops capacity remaining.PNG

We can't seem to understand where the "4014.23 MBps" comes from, and why there is only 10% left.

Can you help us please?
