Purple Screen on Cisco UCS server with ESXi 6.5 Build 5146846 (March 9, 2017)

Last week I patched our (7) lab ESXi 6.5 servers to the current patch level (Build 5146846 - from March 9, 2017).  The (5) Dell servers have been running flawlessly on this new patch level.  However, the (2) Cisco UCS B200 M4 servers have been crashing constantly with Purple Screen of Death (PSOD).  I verified that the Cisco UCS servers are running the current firmware (BIOS & VIC) supported by Cisco with ESXi 6.5, and I also used Update Manager to apply the current Cisco Image Profile ("Vmware-ESXi-6.5a.0-4887370-Custom-Cisco-6.5.0.2-Bundle.zip" from 2017-03-14), to get the current drivers, but that did not help -- PSODs continued.  The PSODs keep occurring on both ESXi hosts in the 2-node Cisco cluster, rendering a complete cluster outage.  First, one ESXi host PSODs.  Then a little while later, the second ESXi host PSODs.  Sometimes the PSOD takes 5 hours to occur, sometimes it only takes 25 minutes.  (Another PSOD occurred while I was typing this post, after a reboot of the blade just about 25 minutes earlier.)  I've captured dozens of PSOD screen shots, and every single one contains the following lines:

NOT_IMPLEMENTED bora/vmkernel/sched/cpusched.c:9581

On each PSOD, a different VM name is listed two lines below the above error code, so there is no consistency as to which VM triggers this panic.

The interesting thing is that the (5) Dell servers are humming along without issue on this patch level.  The Cisco servers are using Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 v3 CPUs, while the Dell servers are using earlier generation CPUs (Sandy Bridge or Westmere).  Both the Dell servers and Cisco servers are using vSphere Replication 6.5.  The Cisco servers are running a heavier load of VMs, many of which are using multiple vCPUs, so perhaps there is another vCPU scheduling bug that is being triggered?

We have vRealize Log Insight running, and the following are some of the last messages sent by the ESXi host after PSOD:

[Originator@6876 sub=VpxaHalCnxHostagent opID=WFU-491dcb0b] Applying updates from 215636 to 215637 (at 215636)

[Originator@6876 sub=PropertyProvider] RecordOp ASSIGN: guest, 45. Sent notification immediately.

The vRealize Log Insight VM is running in the Cisco cluster, so I might be missing some of the most important log entries right at the time of the PSOD.

Anyone else running into this??  (Note that this is a "lab" environment, so it's not production impacting.  This is exactly why we have a "lab" environment!!!)

Below is one screen shot example of the PSOD.  They all pretty much look like this:

Removable devices not showing: VMware Workstation 9

Greetings to all,

New to virtualization. I got me VMware Workstation 9 on windows 7 ultimate host running Ubuntu 12.04 guest and BackTrack_5_R3. On both, I see no removable devices that the host Win 7 recognizes.

In settings the usb controller is present and using usb compatibility 3.0. All my USB ports are 3.0; hope that is not the issue.

Now my laptop has a camera that is seen in removable devices. But when i connect one usb flash drive for example, it never shows in the removable devices on both guest: Ubuntu 12.04 and BackTrack 5_R3. I tried with an external usb wifi card on both VMs and still no dice. Vmware-tools is installed on both vms and running perfect. latest version of the vmware tools.

I have spent the last day or so trying to figure out the issue but to no avail. I read the manual but could not find any answer. I would really appreciate some help.

One more thing, some posts mentionned a firewall issue. Still same issue with my firewall deactivated.

Kind Regards,

VCSA 6.5 - overall health Status unknown

Hello community

When I check the summary tab in the webgui of my VCSA 6.5 then under overall health it says unknown. Under Health Messages "unable to get information on available updates" is reported:

2017-03-29 12_46_38-VMware Appliance Management.png

When I switch to the Update Section in the Navigator and check the repository for updates, it says that all updates are already installed:

2017-03-29 12_55_54-VMware Appliance Management.png

Also by checking the health via API it says "health; gray". The update settings are all left to their default settings.

Does anybody have the same issue? How can the status unknown be resolved? Are there any logs in the VCSA that can be checked?

Conditional FTA's not working in Windows 10 1607?

$

Hi,

I'm trying to use the FTA user environment settings with conditions to set the default program for PDFs.  The use case is this: we have Adobe Reader DC And Adobe Acrobat DC installed on the golden image.  Acrobat DC is only licensed when a user logs into it with their Adobe Creative Cloud credentials.  I have two items configured for the pdf file extension...

First:

Associate PDF's with Adobe Acrobat DC

if user is a member of AD group "Adobe_Pro_Default"

Second:

Associate PDF's with Adobe Reader DC

if user is NOT a member of AD group "Adobe_Pro_Default"

When I check the debug log, it appears that the conditions are working properly and settings are getting applied.  However it seems that Windows is still associating Edge with PDF's.

I've seen some documents about customizing the default FTA's in the parent image, but that is not what I need.  I need conditional FTA's to avoid having to maintain a separate parent image.

Thanks!

Can't connect to host printers V12.5

I have a problem with using the host's printers from the gust OS in WS V12.5. In previous versions, I have had no problems. However in V12.5 I cannot get it to work. My host OS is Win 7 Pro and the guest OS is also Win 7 Pro. I have added printer to the guest VM settings and have also enabled virtual printers in work station. However when I try to connect to the host printers, I get an error message "serial0: Unable to launch virtual printer proxy: The system cannot find the file specified."

Can someone help here?

I have 17 machines in a pool that should be automaticlly mapping printers however I keep getting the following error randomly. (It works for a week then gives this error)

Some VMs went from having one to two drives

Hey all, I had an issue a few days ago that required power-cycling a host and a datastore to get them back up and running. I checked logs on the datastore and the affected host but I never did find out what happened. Today I was looking through vCenter to make sure everything was working right and it is but I found something unusual -- some of my VMs now have a second hard drive. I took a class a while back and was told that using vMotion can fix many storage issues. Well, it didn't this time.

So, are there any preparatory things I need to do before removing the "second" drive from the system?

Thanks,

Difference between vMotion and Storage vMotion

$

Hello All,

Too many "sales" discussions have me confused. I have been trying to get my head around the difference between vMotion and Storage vMotion.

I have inherited a 5.1 Standard running on 2 servers with shared storage.  I am looking at what would be lost if we upgrade to Essentials Plus vs Standard.  As I understand the other differences (hotplug virtual hardware, vSphere fault tolerance), I am not sure what the difference is between vMotion and Storage vMotion.

As I can start listing my guesses, I look to the experts to help educate me.  It may be simple, but the costs are double between and Standard and Essentials Plus.

Thank you all in advance for your support.

Report based on number of vCPUs

I'm rather new to vR Ops and trying to build a monthly report based on basic T-Shirt sizing of virtual machines: xsmall, small, medium, large, xlarge, xxlarge, etc. Each size obviously has it own number of vCPUs and RAM. I just need a count of the average of each type deployed during the month. I've tried profiles, various views, etc... what's the best way for going about doing this? Any help is appreciated.

Relationships between Application (deployment) and VM's (VMware Virtual Machine Instance)???

Is there a way to show these relationships in vRA?  Ideally, we'd want all the networks and associated items that come along with the deployment to fall under a parent/child relationship.

VCentre Server Connection Problem

$

Hi there,

We discovered a problem whereby we were unable to connect to our VCentre Server which reported the error‘incorrect username or password’.

We know 100% the username (vsphere.local\administrator) and password are correct.  We haven’t made any changes since we first established our VMware environment 3 years ago.

The version of the vcenter server appliance is 6.0.0

Yesterday we tried ‘resetting’ the vcenter server from one of our virtual hosts.  We watched the server reboot and did notice an error that the embedded database had failed to start along with a few other errors which may have referenced some services not starting (although it was hard to keep up with the fast scrolling screen).  When we try to logon using the client we get the error below connecting from the client software:

Could Not Connect.png

Using the web client, we get the error:

Web Error.png

We can see the server logon screen when we connect from the host:

vShpere.png

Our environment consists of:

vCenter Server

Hosts

Virtual Machines

vCentre Server

v6.0.0

Host 1

4 Virtual Machines

Host 2

4 Virtual Machines including the virtual server software (vSphere Client)

The virtual server software is running on the 2nd host.

We cant remember the last time we connected to the server but suspect it was between 3-6 months ago.

I have also attempted to SSH (after enabling it from the host - it's worth noting that BASH commands wouldn't enable) on to the vSphere client which sits on our 2nd host using Putty however I continue to get an error "Network Error: Software caused connection abort" which means I can't really check the services.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi all,

I am running into a peculiar issue with Horizon 7.0.3. Have a single desktop pool with dedicated assignment. The pool will provision the desktops but will not power it up. The status stays in "Provisioning" until you start seeing entries in vCenter that the desktops are getting deleted after which the provisioning with error out with "View Composer DiskFault: disk customization failed due to an internal error"

I have double checked all permissions for the service accounts used by Composer as well as connection servers.

Any ideas?

Using:

  • Horizon 7.0.3
  • vSphere ESXi 6.5
  • VCSA 6.5 appliance

Bladelogic EPI agent and Vra

$

Hello all,

I got a strange issue with Vra and bladelogic agent.

We have configured the agent on our infrastructure and set the default property below :

But the registration on bladelogic failed.

i noticed on the IaaS server the command sent for the execution of the NSH script is weird.

It miss an argument (BMC.AddServerDelay) that cause a missmatch on the argument (FIRST ISSUE) .

if I fix it manually, it still not working.

I notice that the servername is sent using the machine name and not the FQDN, that the reason of my error, If I run the NSH manually with FQDN the server is well registered!

So my question is...

How I can fix the serverdelay issue, and main problem how can I say to Vra to use the FQDN name for agent communication instead of Mahcine name!

thanks for your help.

Hi, I have ESXi 6.5 running using a data set on a SYNOLOGY iSCSI Disk.

I expanded the iSCSI disk, but can not get the data set to expand.  ESXi sees the extra space, but I can't expand the current volume by selecting increase data store size- I simply get a message saying it can can not.  I can create a new data set.

I tried doing this while the machine was in maintenance mode

HELP!

Annoying issues with VMware Workstation 12.5

$

Dear VMware experts,

I was recently forced to switch to Windows 10 (Enterprise), 64-bit. I used that opportunity to also switch to the latest

VMware Workstation 12.5.

I immediately experienced very annoying problems. When I try to start a VM, it says, that it can't access the VM and

after a short googling, I found the solution - that it's necessary to restart the 'VMware Authorization Service'.

Nevertheless this worked, I find it particularly annoying, that this is just a workaround, that needs to be applied EVERY

TIME I need to launch a VM and this is NOT OK - it costs me precious time and it's pretty much distracting my thoughts.

Please kindly let me know, if there is a solution to this problem, or I shall revert back to version 11, which was working

flawlessly (at least under Windows 7).

Many many thanks for your help in advance!

How to reduce a vmdk ?

Hi,

Our environment : Vmware vSphere 5.5.0, 3252642.

I want to reduce the C:\ disk on a Windows 2012 server.

FIrst I shrinked the partition with diskpart (OK).

Then I tried to reduce the vmdk by "edit settings" but it failed : the disk remain with his ancient size.

Shutting down the server doesn't change anything.

Thank's for your help,

Luc Bourget.
