is should appear as follows:

If installed locally on a server 2016 machine the title bar appears as it should.

Migrate existing datastore to new ESXi host

Hi there,

I am confused with all materials that I found. What I want to achieve is:

I have one physical disk on top of which datastore is created (VMFS 6). I want to remove that disk, move to another server (different ESXi installation), mount it and be able to see and access all files on this datastore in new ESXi (same version - 6.7).

Is this possible? What are the correct steps to properly umnount the datastore and then mount it again in new installation?

In regards to the last question, in the "New datastore" wizard I cannot see good option to achieve this. I can only create new VMFS datastore which basically erase all existing content on this disk (attachment) and this is not what I am looking for as I want to preserve it's content.

Live Migration works with hosts running ESXi 6.0, but not 6.7 U1

So this is more of a general question/puzzling issue than a problem. In the interest of brevity, I kept the discussion title short, so here's full issue:

We have 4 standalone servers pertinent to this discussion (we'll call them Host 1, 2, 3, and 4). Hosts 1 and 2 have the same CPUs. Hosts 3 and 4 have CPUs from different families (so 3 different CPU families in total). Hosts 1 through 3 had been running ESXi 6.0 for a while and we were able to live migrate vms between them. We upgraded Host 3 to 6.5, and we still able to live migrate between hosts 1 through 3. We re-purposed one of our other on-prem servers and installed 6.7 U1 on it, giving us Host 4. We were able to live migrate vms from Host 3 to Host 4, so we cleared Host 3 off and shut it down (our license is only for 6 CPUs). Then, when we tried live migration from Host 1 or Host 2 to Host 4, it didn't work. I resuscitated Host 3 with an evaluation license thinking it would work as a man-in-the-middle until I could get Hosts 1 and 2 cleared off, but now we aren't able to perform live migration between any hosts except 1 and 2.

TL;DR: Hosts 1, 2 and 3 running ESXi 6.0 used to be able to live migrate vms between them, but after introducing Host 4 running 6.7 U1, only Hosts 1 and 2 can do it now.

I understand that the best solution would be to add the hosts into an EVC enabled cluster (or get another server with a matching CPU) but if we can get everything shuffled around to the point that we can upgrade all our hosts to 6.7 U1, then add them to a cluster, that would be ideal.

How to add custom RunSynchronous to the unattended xml generated by VMWARE?

Hello, I'm usung an external tool (Saltstack with salt-cloud commands) and checking the cloned VM the unattende xml generated by VMWARE for the sysprep commnad has the below commnads.... is there a way to add my one custom command after those? (there is another section FirstLogonCommand that also has some commands and that part we can add commands to).

In other words, does anyone have any clue where do these 4 default RunSynchronousCommand wcm:action="add" get added or generated?

Or is it something VMWare has stored in a file or DB as a defualt unattended.xml/sysprep.xml (answer file) in case the user doesn't provide it?

Thanks!

If a host is being added to an EVC enabled cluster, and it's processor meets the baseline requirements, will it need to be rebooted as part of the process?

Windows Failover clustering with 2 local disk and 5 rdm... Cluster validation fails

$

Hi all,

First real quick:  ESX 6.5 (7967591), FCoE, NetApp backend, Cisco UCSB (Flexpod configuation)... OS: Windows 2012 R2

So, the cluster is being setup to support SQL (nit installed yet)... For my disk layout, C: (OS), D: (SQL Binaries) and Shared E: (Bkup), G: (Data), L: (Logs), T: (Temp), Q: (Qrm)

Shared on one SCSI controller and "local" on another. Both Paravirtual, Physical, etc.

** I used VMWare's published Windows Clustering guide for CAB (cross across boxes)

When running validation wizard, I get

As per VMWare support:

++ As per the best practices of Cluster Virtual Machines Across Physical Hosts on VMware vSphere 6.5 , we can have only one Virtual Disk mapped (booting) rest all should be P-RDMs

And I can map through D: as an RDM (which is what I am bein told to do), but it makes no sense to me... And yes, if I drop my D: drive, the problem goes away. And yes, I can install SQL to C:...but really??? I can only have one virtual disk!
What if I wanted to leverage my SDD local datastore for TempDb... a common scenario. I couldn't?

More details:
D: was not part of the Available Storage disks or any cluster resource
D: shows up as a Local Disk

Tried changing SCSI to LSI SAS... still no....

Note: NetApp on the backend;

SO........... Anyone ever heard of a restriction on the Virtual Disk count. I can't find any documentation and vmware support just says it's common practice????

Workstation 15 Pro

Windows 10 Host

No Snapshots

I have been going through all the similar issues on this forum and there are similar questions but My VM has two hard disks and one of the disks is based on an NFS.

Attempts tried so far:

I cloned the vm, it boots to initramfs, not sure if 2nd hard disk is cloned.

I have created new VM and pointed to the existing vmdk, boots to initramfs

I have deleted the lck folders, no joy.

I have tried ovf export, but no joy in ESXi.

I have tried vmplayer, no joy.

Most other options will not work due to the file being locked.

I have a eve-ng vm running for a few months and no issues.

I have two hard disks (1st local SSD drive 150GB e:, 2nd 150GB NFS which was added few weeks ago)

I have been using this VM daily with no issues and after missing one day, problems.

I have attached the logs, the vmx, vmxf, vmsd and the vmdk of the 2nd hard drive.

If you need any further information, please let me know.

Appreciate any help that can be offered.

VMWare player or VMWare Workstation Player

I am currently running the free download VMware Player V6.0.7 on a Dell laptop which has an O/S - Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. I am in the process of
upgrading to a new Dell Inspiron laptop. So, I'll need to download the free VMWare Player again. However I can not locate it.
I have found a free download for VMWare Workstation Player 15. A version for Windows and one for Linux.

Q1. FOR A FREE DOWNLOAD,  Is VMWare Workstation Player now the replacement for VMWare Player ?

Q2. Dumb as this question  may appear, since my O/S is Windows 10 Pro I assume I need to download the Windows version
    of this product if in fact this is the replacement for VMWare Player , correct ?

many thanks Brian

The goal of that document is to give a very deep technical understanding on

It is based on OpenStack Queens.

Note: It also highlights the specifics with VIO.

Powershell output has extra objects on VRO

$

Hi All,

I have a simple Ps script which just returns a name in the form of an object. what i am hoever finind is that extra objects are being returned by the Ps script when it gets to vro.

My PS script looks like this.

Param

(

[Parameter(Mandatory=$true)] [string] $ServerName

)

[CmdletBinding]

$myobject = New-Object -TypeName psobject

$myobject  | Add-Member -MemberType NoteProperty -Name FName -Value "Tom"

$myobject  | Add-Member -MemberType NoteProperty -Name Rank -Value "1"

$myobject

However on VRO, when I process the output which is of type PowershellRemotePSObject.

var x  = output.getRootObject();

var whatsmyname

for (idx in x) {

//each item is complex objec  having two properties (name,age)

//it is mapped to PowerShellPSObject

var obj = x[idx]

System.log("Name : " + obj.getProperty('FName') + " Rank : " + obj.getProperty('Rank'));

whatsmyname = obj.getProperty('FName');

}

I seem to be getting 2 rows, one is completely null and the other has the results from my script.

Is there a way to eliminate the null values, I also noticed tht my PS script brings back the following when executed from vro.

IsPublic IsSerial Name                                     BaseType

-------- -------- ----                                     --------

True     False    CmdletBindingAttribute                   System.Management.Automation.CmdletCommonMetadataAttribute

FName : Tom

Rank  : 1

I suspect that this is the extra row being converted to null, is there a way to exclude them and only return the legitimate values ?

Param ([Parameter(Mandatory=$true)] [string] $ServerName

)[CmdletBinding]

$myobject = New-Object -TypeName psobject

$myobject  | Add-Member -MemberType NoteProperty -Name FName -Value "Tom"$myobject  | Add-Member -MemberType NoteProperty -Name Rank -Value "1"

OVF Library Item Deploy: How to set PropertyParams in additional_parameters?

$

0

Hello,

I am using the vCenter REST API to deploy OVF's which I can successfully do. However, I'm unable to get additional_parameters to work properly. Specifically, custom PropertyParams. The API either a) ignores my request, or b) returns a 500 Internal Server error with the following message: "Could not convert field 'properties' of structure 'com.vmware.vcenter.ovf.property_params'".

I have tried various approaches with no luck.

My understanding from the documentation is the request should look like this:

deployment_spec : {

  /* ... */

  additional_parameters : [

    {

      type : 'PropertyParams',

      properties : [

        {

          id : 'custom_prop_name_found_in_ovf',

          value : 'true'

        }

      ]

    }

  ]

}

(the above results in the conversion error)

What am I doing wrong here?!

Note that this is using the ovf deploy API:

POST https://{server}/rest/com/vmware/vcenter/ovf/library-item/id:{ovf_library_item_id}?~action=deploy
