Horizon View 8 (2006) - Snapshots

$

After I create an instant clone pool, I am no longer able to create snapshots on the parent virtual machine.  I receive the error in VCenter: "

An error occurred while taking a snapshot: A digest operation has failed.".  If I copy the parent VM (while Horizon is still using it as a parent), I get the same error when I create a snapshot on the copy.

The only thing I have found that I can do is kick everyone out of the pool, delete the pool, then create the snapshot, then recreate the pool.  Kinda rough on high availability.

I thought it might be related to replication as the parent VM is replicated, so I ended replication on it the last time I had deleted the pool and deleted all snapshots.  Still had the problem after creating the instant clone pool.

I don't have this problem with any other VM when taking snapshots.  I was running Horizon 7.12 on ESXi 6.7 until about a month ago and never experienced this issue.

VCenter is 7, build 16749670

ESXi hosts are version 7 with no updates available

Has anyone else experienced this?

Auto-suspend feature in Workstation Pro 14

How does the auto-suspend feature work in Workstation Pro 14?   As far as I can tell from the documentation, this feature only works for Shared and Remote vm's. I have a few VM's whose files are saved on different physical drives in the Windows host and if I'm not mistaken, Shared VM's must be on the same physical drive. I prefer to have them on different physical drives for better performance. Is there a way to use auto-suspend for non-Shared VM's?  I see a setting in the bundled Workstation Player that came with Workstation Pro, it says "When closing a virtual machine:" and there's an option to "Suspend the virtual machine." But even if that's the feature I'm looking for, this option wouldn't work because I need to run multiple VM's at once which I don't believe is possible in Player. This feature is described in the documentation at https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/14.0/com.vmware.ws.using.doc/GUID-E3CF099C-DE18-44A4-9B81-24BCD72004BE.html

それぞれをEsxi-A,Esxi-Bとします。

Esxi-Aの方がストレージ容量が大きいので、すべての仮想OSイメージは

Hi

Not sure if  this is the right forum for this.......

When trying to power on Linux server get the following error in vSphere XXXXXX.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. Failed to lock the file.

looked through various VM KBs not really helpful.  Recreated the descriptor file as advised here VMware Knowledge Base

but still not powering on.

The disk chain is consistent.

background:

VMware ESXi, 6.0.0, 7504637

Server is Linux box.

Any pointers or help much appreciated.

"Upgrading" to VMware Fusion 11.5.6 BREAKS virtual machines that worked with 11.5.5

Something very like this appears from prior discussions to have been a problem for multiple people under circumstances that I could not identify.

I am using macOS 10.14.6 on a late 2015 27-inch iMac Retina 5K  - -  also known as iMac17,1.

I have four virtual machines:  Windows 8.1, Windows 10, macOS 10.13, and macOS 10.14.

All were working with Fusion 11.5.5, all are identically broken now that I have "upgraded" to 11.5.6.

When I try to start the virtual machine the following error dialogs are displayed:

1.  Could not open /dev/vmmon:  Broken pipe. (In a free-standing box on the same external monitor as the virtual machine library window.)

2.  Failed to initialize monitor device.  (In a drop-down box from the title-bar of the virtual machine's window on the iMac itself.)

3.  Transport (VMDB) error -14: Pipe connection has been broken.  (In a drop-down box from the title-bar of the virtual machine's window on the iMac itself.)

The TeamIdentifier hack discussed in the other thread did not make a difference.

Re-installing from a freshly downloaded copy of the installer .dmg did not make a difference.  It did NOT require me to re-enter the license key, so obviously it did not start by removing everything.  It gave me no choices about what to install or where.

Failed to create VMFS datastore - Cannot change the host configuration.

Coming hot off the heels of the lasttwo issues, I now have only one more to address before I start applying security patches (last step before moving forward with VM creation). I'm trying to access the drive mentioned here (WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB SATA SSD) in ESXi 6.5, but can't seem to touch it at all. When I try to make a new datastore, I receive the following error:

  • Failed to create VMFS datastore - Cannot change the host configuration.

Do I need to enable SSH and ready the SSD from command line (If so, how)? And when following the instructions given in officialdocumentation, I can't seem to find Virtual Flash Resource Management for the life of me. Does this feature require use of vCenter by chance? I understand that this prompt seems very fragmented, so I'll put it like this:

I want to use the SSD as Virtual Flash, first and foremost. If that can't be done, how would I go about fixing the error above to make it into a VMFS datastore instead?

If you need me to pull up logs or other materials, please let me know. I've seen other posts with this error message, but I'm not sure how to fix this myself.

New Server Project

Hello! It's been a minute since I last posted here with my own topic. I now have a dedicated ESXi server in the works, and am planning to start using it 24/7 by the end of this year. Here are the specs for the hardware:

CSE  :: HPE ProLiant DL580 G7
CPU  :: 4x Intel Xeon E7-8870's (10c/20t each; 40c/80t total)
RAM :: 64GB (16x4GB) DDR3-1333 PC3-10600R ECC
STR  :: 1x HP 518216-002 146GB HDD (ESXi, VMware Linux Appliance, System ISOs) +
                        1x Western Digital WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB SATA SSD (Virtual Flash) +

                        4x HP 507127-B21 300GB HDDs +

                        1x 500GB Seagate Video ST500VT003 HDD (Remote Development VM)

             1x LSI SAS 9201-16e HBA SAS card (4-HDD DAS) +

                        1x Mini-SAS SFF-8088 to SATA Forward Breakout x4 cable +

                        1x Kingwin MKS-435TL (4x 3.5in HDD cage) +

                        4x HITACHI HUA722020ALA330 HDDs

PCIe :: 1x HP 512843-001/591196-001System I/O board +

                        1x HP 588137-B21; 591205-001/591204-001 PCIe Riser board
GPU :: 1x nVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB +

                        2x1x nVIDIA Tesla K10's
SFX  ::  1x Creative Sound Blaster Audigy Rx

NIC   ::  1x SolarFlare SFN5322F +

                        1x HP 491838-001 (NC375i)

FAN  ::  4x Arctic F9PWM 92mm case fans **

PSU  ::  4x 1200W Server PSU's (HP 441830-001/438203-001)

PRP  ::  1x Dell MS819Wired Mouse

Parts marked with * have not been purchased/sourced yet. Those marked with ** are already in-house, but require further planning/modification before they can be added to the server.

As of now, the fans aren't really required for functionality. They were meant to help quiet the server down a bit, but they requiresomemodification to work. This part can wait.

Here is the current software configuration plan for the server:

*  Temporary task that will be replaced by a permanent, self-hosted solution

** Can benefit from port forwarding, but will be primarily tunnel-bound

^  Tunnel-bound (VPN/SSH) role - not port forwarded/exposed to the Internet

+ Active Directory enabled - Single Sign On (SSO)

Here is the current resource allocation plan for the server:

  • VMware nix Appliance     :: 24/7 - true,  dedicatedHDD - false, dedicatedGPU -  false,     2c/4t + 4GB
  • Temporary/Testing VM     :: 24/7 - false,  dedicatedHDD - false, dedicatedGPU -  true,  12c/24t + 20-24GB *
  • Windows  Server  2016     :: 24/7 - true,  dedicatedHDD - true,  dedicatedGPU -  false,    8c/16t + 12-16GB
  • macOS Server 10.14.X      :: 24/7 - true,  dedicatedHDD -  true,  dedicatedGPU -  true,    8c/16t + 12GB
  • Artix Linux - Xfce ISO       :: 24/7 - true,   dedicatedHDD - true,  dedicatedGPU -  false,    8c/16t + 12GB
  • Windows 10 Enterprise    :: 24/7 - false,  dedicatedHDD - true,  dedicatedGPU -  true,  12c/24t + 20-24GB *
  • Remote Development VM :: 24/7 - false, dedicatedHDD -  true,  dedicatedGPU -  true,  12c/24t + 20-24GB *

VMs marked with an * cannot be run at the same time. Only one of them can ever run at any given moment. MacOS and Linux would have gotten a Radeon/FirePro (ie., Rx Vega 64), for best compatibility and stability, but market forces have prevented this. Windows 10 gets the Creative Audigy Rx. The MacOS and Linux VMs get whatever audio the Tesla K10's provide (either that or a software solution). Windows 10, Remote Development, and the Temp/Testing VM will be put to sleep (or offed) until they are needed (Wake on LAN), since they don't host any essential services.

There are three other mirrors for this project, in case you're interested in following individual conversations from the other sites (in addition to this thread).

P.S. Out of all the sites that I've ever used, this forum has one of the best WYSIWYG editors I've used in a while Kudos to the devs!

Windows 10 Unhandled Exception

Hello all,

We are trying to enrolled Windows 10 (1909 Enterprise) using the Intelligent Hub. I put the server info, group id, then the username and password and then get a message from the Hub that, "There was an unhandled exception on the server." We're on-prem and version 2005 of Workspace. Has anyone seen this with Windows before? Where would be the best place to look to see what might be causing this error? I've checked the DeviceServices log on the device server but can't find anything Windows enrollment related.

Configuring Harbor as a Docker Registry on vRA8 Code Stream

I'm trying to configure harbor as a docker registry as a vra 8 Code Stream endpoint but it seems that I'm not putting the correct url or it's not supported.

I was able to configure the public Docker Hub in vRA Code Stream.

I'm now trying to configure the harbor registry. I'm trying with the url for my test project repositories but I'm getting this error:

Malformed Repo URL: Please follow the suggested pattern

I'm using the url from the harbor registry repository that is something like this:

https://harborfqdn/harbor/projects/35/repositories/testpks%2Fhello

I tried to remove the %2Fhello or to put ":hello" but I get the same error:

If i put the url in a format that vra8 seems to accept like https://harborfqdn/repositories/testpks/hello

I get an error as that page return a 404:

Validation Failed as user details or Repo Url is incorrect

Anyone was able to use Harbor Registry with VRA 8 Code Stream?

Setup:

Multiple WAN uplinks -> Velocloud Edge -> Next-Gen-FW -> Clients

WAN uplinks come with static IPs

Routing Connection VCE to NGF is done via BGP

DNS internal is ssetup in VCE

How do I get VCO/VCE to use the internal DNS for reverse lookup of Source IPs, so that we don't have to enter them all manual

Horizon fails to provision successfully on NSX-T segments

$

Hi,

We're using Horizon 7.12 and NSX-T 2.5.0

Building instant clone pools on NSX-T segments. With the network selected for the pool . from the parent image.

On building the pool a number of the VMs appear not to connect to the network correctly.

Symptoms

vSphere VM object shows the NIC connected, disconnecting and reconnecting this makes no difference to the problem.

Guest OS shows 'Media Disconnected' in Windows 10.

Resetting the machines from View will sometimes fix this issue, sometimes it won't.

NSX-T shows the ports as operational state down!? If you admin down the ports for 30 seconds or more and then admin up the ports. The machines connect to the network and operational status goes green. View then blows them away again, obviously, they are instant clones, and they come back up broken again.

Seems entirely unreliable.

Anyone seen this?

Cheers.

Fusion "connect to server" feature

$

VMWare Fusion > File > Connect to Server... allows me to enter the IP/DNS of another device.

Can this remote device be another Mac running Fusion on my same home network?

When I try this I get the error, "Unrecognized server type, VMware Fusion is not able to determine the type of server..."

Or does this feature only work with some other sort of VMware product? I don't want to spend time troubleshooting this if it's not ever going to work. If it should work then what is likely the problem? I am able to ARD to the same Mac.

My Mac desktop is under utilized and has much more ram and I'd prefer to run VMs there and control them from my Mac laptop. I know that I can remote to my Mac using ARD or Screen Sharing to do the same things but would prefer to either use an app for this, like Fusion, or a web console interface. (kind of like a vSphere experience)

If this won't work then is there another virtualization product that runs on Macs, running both Windows and Linux VMs, that will allow this?

How to search for VMs matching a specific custom attribute

Hi all,

Our VMs have a custom attribute called owner that has the VM owner's e-mail address in it.

Is there a way to search for all VMs such that owner EQ a specific string without having to retrieve the attributes for every VM in our inventory?

Thanks in advance!

Windows XP Virtual Disk problems

$

I've used disk2vhd to copy the contents of my old Acer Laptop's hard drive, with Windows XP SP3 installed, to my MSI computer in order to run it as a virtual machine. However, whenever I boot it up, whether it be in VirtualBox or VMWare, I get this error:

Windows VHD trouble.PNG

I've done this with another computer with Windows XP SP2 and that one ran well. This buggy virtual drive is a .vhd file. I have opened the contents of this hard drive myself, and compared the system file with that of the working Windows hard drive, so I can only assume that Windows is having trouble accessing the system file in the first place.

What do I do?

Heartbeat Wait Time

$

Hi,

We have 3 Hosts in HA and heartbeat is present between them via network as well as through HA Heartbeat using 2 datastores.
We have a physical network switch in the rack that needs to turned off for a brief period for an adapter change. It will be turned off for say 5 minutes.

Is there a chance this would cause any issues with the VMs ? I understand that during the switch power off internet will not be available and the services will be out of reach.
But will it auto resume once its powered back on ? Any chance that it will cause the Hosts to try HA and try to reboot the VMs? How long will it wait for HA Heartbeat?
