In vR Ops 6, VMs lose their original relationships with Datastores after set up a Hyperic Adapter instance

Hi, folks.

VMs has Datastores as their child object in the vCenter Adapter.

But after config a Hyperic adatper instance, such relationships are lost.

For example,

- Before the problem : VM(vCenter Adapter) - Datastore(vCenter Adapter)

- After the problem : VM(vCenter Adapter) - OS(Hyperic Adapter)

- What I expected : VM(vCenter Adapter) - OS(Hyperic Adapter) and Datastore(vCenter Adapter) = vC Ops 5.8.x way

Did anyone experience this problem?

Hi all,

I have VM with a 10TB vmdk, which I want to backup using Commvault Simpana.

The snapshot gets created successfully, but after that only errors are returned. I found this snippet in the hostd.log:

This error seems to occur when the vmdk size is bigger than 5TB., there is plenty of room for snapshot overhead on the datastore.

The CommVault logs only show 'possible VDDK deadlock encountered', the used VDDK version is 5.5.1

The host is running ESXi version 5.5.0-2143827

Does anybody ever experienced anything like this?

Hello guys,

since the new view agent 6.x, I have many strange issues.

I have a pool with about 150 users.

Sometimes I get:

     - Bluescreens after the user tries to connect (status of the pool is "power off")

     - Users are not able to print -> error message

     - Some applications are not able to start (installed on the master image), office applications, lotus notes,...

there is only 1 thing that solves the problem.

A recompose.

I have only these issues since 6.x.

Thank you for help.

Poor graphics performance on VMWare Fusion when using an external monitor

$

Hello,

when using an external monitor (connected on VGA through Thunderbolt adapter), I've noticed severe lags while doing operations with open windows (such as dragging, maximizing, minimizing). In general, it's safe to say that any operations that involve any effect whatsoever (such as opening a start menu), are noticeably laggy. When running in single-window mode or disconnecting the external monitor, none of these lags exist. So I'm strongly assuming that the issue arises from having an external monitor connected.

So - could it be that my Macbook is not powerful enough to run 4 displays at one time (two for Mac OS natively as well as the two virtual ones inside Windows)? Are there any settings that I can try and change which could affect this poor performance? Or is this an issue with VMWare? Please note that the CPU is not even remotely maxed out while running the VM and "stress testing" by moving around windows.

My settings for the VM are attached to this post.

I'm using a mid-2014 Macbook Pro Retina 13" with 16GB of RAM and an Intel i7 @ 3GHz, as well as the latest VMWare Fusion Version (7.1.0). The OS I'm running using VMWare is a Windows 8.1. (set up from Scratch on this machine) with all updates installed (as well as the VMWare Tools). I'm running Windows in a 2560x1600 resolution with scaled icons, but I've tried running VMWare in low resolution with 1440x900 as well, which made no difference.

power off every 2 hours..with a twist

I have this weird problem with a guest computer that poweres down every 2 hours according to web management. In the details it says "powered down by guest " (i cant remember exact wording, but it indicates it was a local shutdown)

The twist is that the machine is not really powered off, it is running silently, it can be accesed thru VNC and FTP.
A "power on " restores acces to it, and it runs as before, all programs remain open etc.

Problems started after a server crash.
The hardware was changed (identical server), but some bios sn &mac adresses have changed, could this be cause of problem?

Initially the virtual machines wouldnt start because files were locked, i renamed the lock files and that problem vanished.

Running server 2.0.2 on a proliant ml350 g5

Any suggestions are highly appreciated !

Is there a way to get list of all VMs, running & non-running, using vmrun?

Hi all,

I am in need of creating a list of running & non-running virtual machines. I am in search of a C++ solution, but a command line would do just fine.

This one, for instance,

     vmrun  -T  ws  list

lists all running VMs, but not turned off ones.

Thank you.

Datastore di rete e switch

Ciao a tutti.

ESXi 5.x on an Intel J1900 board (Q1900-ITX Asrock) issue

$

Hello everyone!

I have been trying to install ESXi 5.1u1 & 5.1u2 & 5.5u1 on the following configuration to no success so far:

Asrock Q1900-ITX mobo (Intel J1900 Baytrail SoC, BIOS 1.20 with VT-x support)

8GB RAM Kingston

120GB OCZ Vector 150 (tried to connect on both SATA2.0 and SATA3.0)

Intel CT1000 NIC

Bootable 4GB FAT32 USB stick with an extracted installation (using Unetbootin) (tried to connect on both USB2.0 and USB3.0)

ESXi 5.1uX results in/stops at a black window/screen after the "Relocating modules and starting the kernel" message.

ESXi 5.5u1 starts loading the modules and stops/freezes right after the "Relocating modules and starting the kernel" message.

I have tried in the bios:

- Boot USB legacy

- Boot USB UEFI

- Disabled PXE (both NICs)

- Video memory to a minimum (64MB)

- Disabled onboard audio & NIC

- I have tried (unofficial?) inserting drivers into the installation ISO (NIC/microcode/xahci) from v-front.de.

I know that most/all of my hardware is not on the HCL, which doesn't mean it can't work, of course (like my old system).

All to no luck so far. However I successfully installed Proxmox hypervisor on this system. Others successfully installed NAS4Free (FreeBSD) or Ubuntu/Debian.

But I want ESXi 5.x for my home server, like I have on my old Intel D525 with a max of 4GB and OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (ESXi 5.1u2).

Maybe someone has some tips or advice to install ESXi 5.x on my new system?

I migrated my databases to a new SQL server successfully.  I am now recreating the SQL jobs per article 2006097.  All worked except for the following:

job_dbm_performance_data_mssql.sql
job_topn_past_day_mssql.sql
job_topn_past_month_mssql.sql
job_topn_past_week_mssql.sql
job_topn_past_year_mssql.sql

I am getting error:

vSphere 5 Essentials Plus Installation Guide

Hello Guys,

I am doing a trial of vSphere 5 Essentials Plus. But I am unsure where to start. I already have 3 servers running VMware ESXi 5.5 and managing them separately using vSphere client. I am using free edition. Now I see VMware offered really good prices model in Essentials and Essentials Plus. Please guide me (as I am unable to locate any kind of guide so far). Some specific questions are,

1. Do I need a separate server to make a controller (to install vCenter Server) or I can install it on any slave node?

2. Can I use one of the VM to install Windows and vCenter Client software on it? Then can I use use same node to deploy virtual machines (using available resources)?

3. What are the minimum requirements for lab setup?

4. Where I can get documentation for VCP?

Hassan

Provisioning Desktops in a pool

$

This may be the wrong place for this post but someone may be able to help.

I was wondering if there was a way to deploy a specific amount of desktops to each datastore within a pool, without having them balance themselves.

For example, say we have 5 datastores and 150 total desktops, is there a way to get the desktops to provision as follows:

Datastore 1 - 36

Datastore 2 - 24

Datastore 3 - 30

Datastore 4 - 26

Datastore 5 - 34

In our set-up we require a specific amount of desktops on each datastore, this can be time consuming when re-provisioning a pool as it all has to be done manually.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello Expert,

We have some physical servers running with ESXi 5.5 U2.  Some configuration changes have been done on those servers by others. We do not want those changes. I was just wondering , do you provide some revert option so that I can revert back to original state when ESX 5.5iU2 was installed? I know in VMs you provide extremely helpful options to create snapshots and revert back to them. Can you suggest something like that for physical servers as well? or the only solution is to resinstall these servers again with ESX 5.5 U2?

Many Thanks in advance for all your help.

How could I backup Oracle Database Backup which vCenter Server 4.1 uses ?

We are using  vCenter Server 4.1.

We use Oracle 10g as DB of that vCenter.

We would like to change redo log size of that Oracle DB because we had bad vCenter performance due to lots of log switch.

How could I backup Oracle DB of vCenter ?

We do not use Oracle Enterprise Manager.

Currently I am thinking of backing up paprameter files

and using expdp.

Is there any  recomendation of vCenter Oracle DB backup ?

We can stop Oracle DB and vCenter server.

[VMW10] 5760 x 1080 Resolution under Windows 7 VM but Windows 8.1

Hello,

I don't understand why VMWare tools for Windows 8.1 do not allow to reach 5760x1080 Screen resolution in VM and it works under Windows 7.

What can I do, now I absolutely need Windows 8.1, if VM Ware don't fix this 1 year old bug, I think I'll go to Hyperv or Virtual Box.

Thanks for your help,

Mount an ESX VMDK in Windows

$

Hi Guys,

I have a basic task to do, I need to extract a few files from a VMDK which was infected with a virus on a Windows 7 computer by mounting the VMDK file offline.  The VMDK is from a Version 8 Virtual Machine running on a VMware vSphere environment 5.1.0 build 1123961.

To mount VMDK files offline, VMware has a tool called VMware-mount.exe which is part of the Virtual Disk Deployment Kit (VDDK).  I downloaded "VMware-vix-disklib-5.1.0-774844.i386.exe" from the VMware website and installed it on a Windows 7 32bit workstation.

I then copied the Virtual Machine to the Windows 7 workstation by downloading it from the VMware datastore in VSphere Client.

When attempting to mount the VMware VMDK offline, I get the following error:

"Unable to mount the virtual disk.  The disk may be in use by a virtual machine, may not have enough volumes or mounted under another drive letter.  If not, verify that the file is a valid virtual disk file."

I have attached the errors to this forum thread.  I followed the instructions for VMware-mount.exe exactly, what am I doing wrong?

Kind Regards,

Clint
